Q: I could not figure out how to use the piezo pickup by itself. Is there a way to use just any one of the three?
Yes, you can use any of the three pickups alone.
You can slide the microphone level slider all the way to the right to turn the mic signal off. Then, if you just want the bridge saddle transducer signal only, you can slide the Piezo slider all the way to the Piezo side.
Alternatively, to get just a mic signal, turn the master volume knob off. This will turn off the signal from both Piezo and magnetic pickups. Then, start sliding the mic level slider to the left a little bit to turn the mic signal on.
Q: I am a gigging musician. Will the Pathmaker™ with the Wechter 3-pickup system be the right guitar for me?
Gigging musicians are exactly who this guitar is designed for. It has the feedback control if you want to play loud: you can turn the mic off and just use the magnetic pickup. If you are playing in a smaller, more intimate environment, you can add the mic for more natural sound. You use the preamp controls to blend your own signal and thus you have more control over your sound instead of being dependent on your mixing guy. Also, you have the versatility of having both XLR and a regular 1/4" jack. Plus, you can phantom power through the XLR jack.
Q: Even though the volume knob is all the way off on my Wechter 3-pickup system, I am still getting some amplified signal. Is this normal?
The volume knob does not control the mic level. You can slide the microphone level slider all the way to the Min to turn the mic signal off.
Q: How do the LED lights work on the Wechter 3-pickup system?
When the white LED glows, it indicates that phantom power is being supplied to the preamp.
If you have a 9V battery installed in the preamp, you’ll see the red low battery indicator LED flicker momentarily when you plug a guitar cord into the output jack. This is normal. Plugging into the output jack has just switched on your preamp.
If you leave the cord plugged in to the output jack, your preamp will continue to be switched on and this will eventually drain your battery. To avoid draining your battery prematurely, unplug the cord from your output jack when you are finished playing.
As long as the red LED flickers momentarily when you plug a cord into the output jack, but does not stay on continuously, there is no problem. If the red LED does not switch off after a few moments, it indicates that it's time to change the battery.
Q: How does the phase switch work on the Wechter 3-pickup system? How can I tell if my phase switch is working?
The phase switch reverses the polarity of the signal. The reason for doing that is to control the phase relationship between your soundboard and your amplifier's speaker. This is primarily a feedback control tool, but it will also affect the tone. You should be able to hear the change in the tone when you flip the phase switch from one direction to the other.
Q: I own the Pathmaker™ with the Wechter 3-pickup system and there is an electronic buzzing sound when I move the slider from "piezo" towards the "magnetic" pickup end.
Most likely it is due to the plug/jack connection where the pickup plugs into the preamp. Please reach into the soundhole and make sure that the plug for the magnetic pickup is inserted all the way into the jack on the preamp. If the magnetic pickup plug is not pushed all the way into the jack in the preamp, the pickup will make a howling sound. Sometimes this plug may be jarred loose in shipment.
Q: I just bought a Pathmaker with the Wechter 3-pickup system and noticed that the B string pole piece on the magnetic pickup is completely recessed while the other 5 extrude about 1/8” above the pickup. Is it normal?
The B string pole piece is intentionally recessed into the magnetic pickup. It’s not a defect that the B string pole piece is down so far.
It can be adjusted if necessary, but we set it that way so that the output will be even. This is how most magnetic pickups are set. If you need to adjust the pole pieces, you can use a small screw driver.
Q: How long is the warranty on electronics?
We offer a 3-year warranty for both the Wechter 3-pickup system and Fishman Prefix Plus. Actually, Fishman warranties their products for 1 year only, but we extend it to 3 years as a service to our customers. We always try to find a fair and reasonable solution in servicing our customers' needs.
